Xirriquiteula Teatre

The first canine astronaut in history inspires a show for the whole family that tells us in a very visual way about a fundamental chapter in the history of space travel, but which is at the same time a story of abuse.

It all happened (since this story is based on actual events) in 1957, when the Soviet Union launched an animal into space for the first time and which ended up going down in history as the first living being to orbit the Earth. It was a little dog named Laika who ran through the parks and squares of Moscow never imagining that her destiny was in those stars she saw every night. She was the protagonist of a tremendous story that led her to the Sputnik II spacecraft and to orbiting around our planet. However, despite being an exciting adventure, the story of Laika did not end well, at least not for her. This is the reason why the Xirriquiteula Theatre takes the opportunity to explain a parallel story: that of those who, like Laika herself, are victims of abuse and are immersed, unwittingly, in the power struggle of others.

Laika is a production of the same company and, to a large extent, the same artistic team, that staged the much applauded Papirus, a show that toured in over twenty countries and that, in 2007, obtained prizes for the best show and best director at the international theatre fair Feten (Gijón) as well as the Drac D'Or prize of the Fira de Titelles de Lleida for best scenography. The show is the result of a long and intense collective work that mixes the contributions, skills, knowledge and visions of each of the artists who participate in it.

A puppet, purposely built for this show, a specially composed soundtrack and a set that is completed with shadows and rear-projections are some of the elements of a performance for all audiences, which tells us about the wonders of the sky, but also of the injustices of the Earth.
