In 1941, nearly 1,600 Jews were burnt to death in the Polish town of Jedwbane. The official version blames the Nazi occupiers for this crime, but two studies demonstrated, in the early-2000s, that the real authors of the massacre were, in fact, the victims’ fellow townspeople. Tadeusz Slobodzianek recreates this tragic story by placing on stage ten classmates, five Catholics and five Jews, who will become the victims and the executioners of those events and, in subsequent years, seen in fourteen scenes/lessons, play the roles of tortured survivors or the ghosts permanently present in the murderers’ minds. Or how nationalism and religion can suddenly turn friends and companions into terrible enemies.
