La lección

The second play that Ionesco wrote after The Bald Prima Donna once more explores the world of the absurd whilst also adhering to the classical unities of space, time and action. In it, a cheerful young girl visits a teacher for a class. As the action develops, however, she will lose her vitality as her teacher gradually takes the upper hand, repressing her rebellious ideas and, as the director of this production puts it, “using the reason of force against the force of reason”. And all this takes place under the watchful gaze of a servant, the real hidden power, who uses the teacher to carry out her will.
