In 1899, when he had already staged what are today great classics of Catalan theatre such as Maria Rosa and Terra baixa, Àngel Guimerà premièred La filla del mar, the story of a girl, the only survivor of a shipwreck in which her parents die, who washes up on the beaches of a town on the Catalan coast.
Agata has grown up as Mariona’s sister, welcomed by her family, but this has not prevented conflicts arising from discrimination and the community’s resistance to accepting difference. The recent return to the community of Pere Màrtir, will be the object of loving discord that will unleash tragedy. With this material as a starting point, La Barni Teatre crosses the time barrier to conduct a review that focuses on the essential and universal elements of history to ask how we treat those we consider different, how our identity conditions the social environment in which we live and why we behave in the way we do as a society. A musical theatre production that aims to bring one of the great classics of Catalan theatre to a contemporary audience.
With the complicity of Jaume Viñas as playwright for this project, the show has been imagined by Marc Sambola, Marc Vilavella and Gracia Fernández, artistic directors of a company created in 2006 and who produced shows such as Ojos verdes. Miguel de Molina in memoriam (2007), El projecte dels bojos, una utopia musical (2011), Le llaman copla (2012) and Tan bonica aquesta nit (2014).
A Grec 2021 Festival de Barcelona and Focus co-production.
