A singer from Majorca stands all the canons on their head and makes modern, up-to-date music based on the traditions of her homeland, in this way demonstrating that you can make contemporary music without losing your roots.
In fact, Folk Souvenir is a sort of journey through the traditional sound landscapes of Majorca, reinterpreted in light of the freest sounds and improvised melodies. The songs in it are versions and revivals based on everything from songs by Maria del Mar Bonet and Antònia Font to work songs, ballads and Majorcan jotes. Joana Gomila’s new musical offering has one foot in the countryside and the other in the city. Jazz, improvisation and roots music go hand in hand in a contemporary feast of folk music. Joana Gomila is not trying merely to revive popular folk songs; she uses them to create new sounds and to make the songs of yesteryear highly topical.
