A group in the Sant Andreu neighbourhood is one of the great breeding grounds for emerging talent on the Barcelona jazz scene. The group, with the support of its founder members, has produced a number of stars, including the artist who is now recording her first album: Elsa Armengou, a 19-year-old trumpet player who has been a member of the Sant Andreu Jazz Band since she turned 6. Over these thirteen years she has had the chance to play with great musicians, including Scott Hamilton, Joe Magnarelli, Dick Oatts, Joel Frahm, John Allred, Terell Stafford, Wycliffe Gordon, Jesse Davis and many more, growing as an artist and participating in over forty of the band’s recordings.
Elsa has been —and still is— one of the cornerstones of the project, created and directed by Joan Chamorro, who has become a leading light for all those who are currently involved in it. Her emerging career is on a spectacular trajectory, reflected in the way she plays, her sound and in her effortless and strikingly imaginative ability to improvise.
