IT Dansa: from Australia to India, going through Barcelona

Naked Thoughts / The Prom / Kaash

The young dance company of the Institut del Teatre celebrates twenty years of life by performing in the festival with three choreographies of outstanding names of contemporary dance, two of which are released in this year's edition.

IT Dansa was born in 1998 aiming at contributing to the professionalization of the dancers who had finished their dance studies at the Institut del Teatre. Twenty years later, it has become a prestigious company that has gone through the Grec Festival in Barcelona a dozen times. They do it again the year in which they commemorates their twentieth anniversary and, and so to celebrate it, they have chosen three pieces created by choreographers that, in some cases, have a lot to do with Asia and the Pacific area.

One of them was already seen in the 2007 Grec and is an especially energetic and exciting piece based on popular culture. Naked Thoughts, by Rafael Bonachela, a master in experimentation who, since 2008, directs the Sydney Dance Company, in Australia. With this choreography, Bonachela proposes a trip for the feelings led by eight dancers and dancers. Later, two more pieces that the company opens this year. The first one is The Prom, a creation of the Barcelonian Lorena Nogal interpreted on a musical collage of the Eighties. Signed by an artist who you may have seen dancing with La Veronal or, before, with Gelabert-Azzopardi or Lanònima Imperial, and even with IT Dansa, where she now returns as a creator, taking advantage of the opportunity that the Institut del Teatre company offers young choreographers.

Finally, this year IT Dansa premieres a choreography of a fundamental reference of contemporary European dance with the roots sunk in India. That is Akram Khan who, in Kaash, presents us with a pure dance performance, with music by Nitin Sawhney based on tribal percussion.

It will be a new sample of the company’s talent directed by the dancer and choreographer Catherine Allard and that, in its twenty years of life, she has created a repertoire that includes choreographies by Jirí Kylián, Ohad Naharin, Rui Horta, Nacho Duato or Jacopo Godani , among others.
