The circus and music are the tools used by six artists to tell us about a verb that we have all conjugated at some time in our lives: running away. They do so in the new edition of a performance project, the Circ d'Hivern, which got underway in 1996.
Every year – for 21 years now – at the Ateneu Popular 9 Barris, one of the most important centres of contemporary circus creativity in Barcelona, a Circ d’Hivern is premiered, an experience that seeks to encourage the creation of new, first-rate ideas associated with the circus. They are premiered at the Ateneu, but after that they have a long life that often takes them on a tour of theatres all over Catalonia. Garbuix, Maravillas, Rodó or the Circus Klezmer (one of contemporary Catalan circus’s most international shows) started life here. Now, six artists trained in different techniques place their extraordinary skills at the service of omnipresent poetry and dramaturgy that takes the concept of running away as its point of reference. From problems, loneliness, fear…. Everybody runs away from something, and some do from realities as harsh as famine or war. Fugitives of all kinds will tell their story in this show, sometimes accompanied by live music, at other times using the most diverse circus techniques – irrefutable proof that the language of the circus is capable of expressing even the most elaborate concepts.
