Inflammation du verbe vivre (Des mourants)

Wajdi Mouawad, the playwright of Lebanese origin, began to bring his project of staging all the tragedies of Sophocles to fruition by presenting two plays, Des femmes (2011) and Des héros (2014). Mouawad entrusted the translation of the works to the poet Robert Davreu, but Davreu’s death forced him to change plans. Finally, in order to stage the last two tragedies, Mouawad decided not to use translations, but to rewrite the works himself, creating the diptych Des mourants. Inflammation du verbe vivre, the first part of the diptych, is inspired by Philoctetes, the story of the wounded warrior abandoned by Ulysses on an island. On stage, Mouawad will himself tell the audience how, after Davreu’s death, he decided to go on a journey to Greece in search of the heroes of classical antiquity and how, along the way, he regained the will to live and found the only possible way in poetry.

The production takes the form of a film which, while being shown, constantly interacts with the stage, occupied by Mouawad. On his travels, the author of Incendies crosses desolate landscapes and even visits infernal worlds that talk to us of Greece as it is today. A taxi driver is his guide through a world full of abandoned souls and howling dogs, a world from which the gods are absent.
