Ingmar Villqist / Dino Mustafić

A theatre company from Sarajevo that continued to be active even during the worst moments of the siege, speaks to us about the need for understanding and love, revealing the terrible truths that can emerge from the human spirit.

In a city without name, somewhere in Europe, Helver and Carla are hiding. In fact, they could in any country affected by crimes, wars and persecution, from Nazi Germany to Rwanda or the former Yugoslavia. Here, a civil war is raging, spreading destruction all around, and that is why the protagonists are hiding, although they are aware that it is only a matter of time before they are found. They are in danger, but Helver, who suffers from mental disability, sees everything as if it were just a game of soldiers. This “Helver’s Night”, a play written by the Polish playwright Ingmar Villqist and directed by Dino Mustafić (Sarajevo, 1969), shows how growing militarism contaminates societies and infiltrates even into domestic affairs. First performed in Sarajevo in 2004, the work meditates on human behaviour when all possibilities of escape are exhausted. Kamerni Teatar 55 continued to pursue its mission of "cultural resistance to aggression and barbarism" in besieged Sarajevo, from 1992 to 1995. Amid bombs and mortar fire, the group stayed true to its principles and gave premiere performances of no fewer than twenty-eight works in a repertoire that rejected all agendas, whether political, national or religious.
