Quiso negro explores the phenomenon of catharsis through the ritual use of acoustic, rhythmic, kinetic and iconographic patterns. It therefore draws on tarantism and its arsenal of myths to traverse a very broad, even contradictory, spectrum of contemporary scenarios of possession and catharsis: from the forms of mourning in ritualised burials to the uncontrolled ecstasy of rave parties. The piece seeks to give the body and the image a stage presence that goes beyond choreography. Quiso negro is about death, but it can be seen as a journey through the most vital aspects of dying: a katabasis, a festive descent.
The Institut del Teatre Dance Prize promotes the work of young creators and performers who have graduated from the Professional Dance Conservatory (CPD), the Higher Dance Conservatory (CSD) and IT Dansa (the Institut del Teatre’s young dance company) by offering them financial support for the production and exhibition of the winning piece, in collaboration with the Barcelona Grec Festival. This year’s winner is Ester Guntín, who holds an undergraduate degree in Humanities, Choreography and Performance from the Institut del Teatre’s Higher Dance Conservatory and a master’s degree in Comparative Studies in Art, Philosophy and Literature from Pompeu Fabra University. She has performed at Sismògraf Olot, CCCB Barcelona, RIDCC Rotterdam, Quinzena de Dança in Portugal and Tanzlabour Ulm, and has worked with artists such as Marcos Morau, Silvia Delagneau, Marta Pazos and Joan Morey. In 2024 she will be working on Ifigènia [Iphigenia] at the Teatre Lliure and will be stage directing a small-scale opera at the Gran Teatre del Liceu as part of OH!Òpera, which will be showcased at this year’s Barcelona Grec Festival.
