August Strindberg

August Strindberg (1849-1912) wrote Ensam (which means “alone”, “being alone” in Swedish) when he was in his fifties, having come through a period of crisis. Ensam —which was not written for the stage— is half private diary, half abstract reflection. It tells the story of a learning process, of a pact with oneself, expressed in a voice that is contemporary, immediate, overwhelming, as it surveys the paths, both real and fictitious, of the past to produce a testimony whose enormous scope and range can only be achieved by a mind that has lived and felt intensely. Thanks to Strindberg’s perceptive and intellectual acuity, his writing never becomes pedantic, elitist or cryptic. Ensam is performed on stage by Pere Arquillué, a leading actor able to absorb and express all the creative force that is revealed in Strindberg the man.
