New cinematographic languages, alternative aesthetics, ways of explaining the world through artistic visions... In reality, videoclips can be all of these things, especially when they’re made for mass consumption, aimed at the widest possible audience. They need to be viewed attentively and with a critical eye, because they’re all too often quick, mass-media ways of exporting certain values worldwide; values that range from the way we relate to each other, to the right of possession, and include the way we experience sexuality, and the family structures that are considered acceptable, or are not. Could videoclips, like the old Christian missionaries, perhaps be cultural colonisers ready to generate gender, class and racial stereotypes? Think about it the next time you watch a videoclip of an unknown artist from a distant country who’s become an international celebrity endorsed by YouTube or another similar platform.
The members of the La Virgueria company, whose project for this show won one of the “2020 Barcelona Awards” (grants awarded by the City Council) invite you to reflect on this. Their production is full of black humour, where music is the protagonist, including an original soundtrack and well-known songs. Body language and a series of video screenings mark the aesthetics of the show. Together, all of these languages construct a parallel reality on stage, demonstrating, ironically, the relationship between videoclips and other audiovisual products we consume and the way we see the world...
This is the new production from La Virgueria, a company formed by Aleix Fauró, Isis Martín, Patricia Bargalló and Júlia Ribera, which seeks to take theatre beyond the venue, inducing reflections and thoughts that stimulate critical thinking. You may have seen their other productions, such as Com menja un caníbal (2019), on the importance of care and the people excluded from the capitalist system, and Medusa (2017), a theatrical version of the novel by Ricardo Menéndez Salmón, by Pablo Ley, which won the Quim Masó i Serra d’Or Award for Best Show of the Year; among many other theatrical creations.
