One of Calderón's greatest plays, converted into an experimental cantata to please lovers of the theatre, the opera, and powerful emotions.
Face it: you are nothing more than actors in a life that is pure theatre. So play your role, and if your script tells you to come to the Grec to see a reworked version of a masterpiece of Spanish baroque theatre, then count yourself lucky. Calixto Bieito, an expert at awakening strong feelings amongst audiences, deconstructs a sacramental act, fusing Spanish and German baroque traditions, mixing actors and opera singers and employing music by Carles Santos. In this “experimental cantata”, as Bieito calls it, all the performances are magnificent, but don’t miss the chance to hear Xavier Sabata, a countertenor who easily reaches the highest notes that the male voice (and some female) voices can produce.
A major production born at the Theater Freiburg in Germany that, by your leave, introduces a “classical” note into this year’s Grec programme.
