El cor de les tenebres

If you have not read Heart of Darkness, you will at least have seen or heard of Francis Ford Coppola’s film Apocalypse Now, which is based on Conrad’s novel and narrates the search for Kurtz, who has gone mad, by Charlie Marlow, a marine who hates lies and tries to know himself as he journeys deeper and deeper into the jungle. Book and film both take as their theme the confrontation between civilisation and a society that is still “wild”, but this stage adaptation goes further and attempts to find the seeds of evil. For, although the extermination of more than ten million people in the Congo by a company founded by King Leopold II is the biggest massacre ever suffered by humanity, many continue to see this episode as a "charitable intervention" by Europe in Africa. That massacre, perpetrated in the name of civilisation, is not so different from those that continue to be inflicted in the name of democracy, purity of blood, religion and so on. All, however, seek the same purpose.

To stage this production on the theme of evil, Teatro de los Sentidos radically change the methods they have adopted so far in their collective career, a necessary transformation that takes into account the brutal nature of the text. Accordingly, the audience is invited to embark on a journey, to trace a route through a desolate landscape, becoming immersed in the darkest parts of their own personality. For each individual’s perceptions, feelings and decisions will help to shape a performance that – you have been warned – pursues an unusual goal: “that the spectators themselves stop the performance”. A journey into the heart of violence and evil that leads this company to make their first foray into the poetry of destruction.
