An audiovisual piece that started life as a documentary project ended up as a theatre production and is now getting back to its origins. In today's Peru, justice and injustice, legality and illegality are much closer to each other than we may think.
Chaska Mori is a playwright, director, script writer and producer of documentaries, who one day started to film an unknown story about her paternal family. The filming, on land that the author had inherited from her father, was interrupted by the appearance of some land traffickers, a common figure in today's Peru, and the start of a long legal battle. The story gave rise to a play that should have been seen at the 2020 Barcelona Grec Festival, but it was postponed due to the Covid-19 crisis. However, we can now see a selection from the original filmed material, along with images from the recording of the above-mentioned play. There are also current images taken at the family home, turned into a film set which the performers cannot leave. From documentary to play and from play to documentary.
After seeing the piece, Chaska Mori will take part in a live online talk with spectators, together with Steven Buendía, co-director of the film; Daniel Lagares, photographer and editor of the production, and the co-producer Sergio Llusera (Centro Cultural de la Universidad del Pacífico). Àngel Grisalvo and Guada Cejas, the directors of La Badabadoc, will also be taking part in the event.
The play El apellido comienza conmigo will be performed in May 2021, as part of the ‘From Grec to Grec’ programme.
The show is part of the Barcelona Grec Festival’s online ‘Local Grec’ section, dedicated to creating online content from productions that should have been seen this summer in the city's small-format theatres. The Covid-19 crisis made it necessary to postpone live performances of productions relating to Latin America, but the Festival is now offering a series of online content that includes performances, talks and other events.
A co-production by Lagartijas Tiradas al Sol, the Centro Cultural de la Universidad del Pacífico and Fílmico.
