I was seven years old and I was staying in my grandmother’s village. Early one morning, I went down to the kitchen. Auntie Guada was washing. Since I was just a child, she took no notice of me. Her hand, under her white nightdress, kept moving. After washing in water, she rubbed alcohol over herself, then covered her whole body in Nivea. She combed her long hair, streaked with grey, tied it in a bun and gave me my breakfast. A thick mist battled against the sun. She said: ‘you take too many showers’. She picked up a bucket, filled it and went out to water the roses. From the window, I watched her gently stroke a rose. I was jealous. This piece is dedicated to my grandmother and her sisters. It is a way of returning their affection. It is a way of trying to understand what we know we will never understand.
