One of the most interesting and transgressive companies on the new Spanish theatre scene offers a piece about a little known phenomenon: child stealing in Spain.
A man born in the late 1970s who up to now has not decided to make a move decides to go on a journey in search of his own identity, of which there is absolutely no trace before he was born. The show actually takes its name from his journey, given that “Cine” refers to the etymology of this word, which in Greek (kiné) means “movement”. The man’s investigation will lead him to revisit his country’s recent history and, specifically, an episode about which, still today, little is said and which is even less common on the stage: child stealing. It is estimated that nearly 300,000 children were stolen from their parents between 1939 and the 1980s, a horrifying figure, especially if we think that in a country such as Argentina the figure is about 500.
The members of La tristura tell the story with the help of the songs of Pablo García (Pablo Und Destruktion), and with images and words. Through these they remain true to the intentions that have driven the company since its beginnings: to take the limits of the stage to the next level in an attempt to imagine what the performing arts of the 21st century ought to be like. Very beautiful images and unusually harsh words mark the history of this theatre group, which, after productions such as Años 90. Nacimos para ser estrellas and Materia Prima, enters a period of evident artistic maturity with CINE.
