One of the newest names in French dance today invites us to reflect, to the rhythm of a hip-hop beat, on the phenomenon of emigration and dreams of exile, especially in the context of relations between France and Algeria.
The hip-hop scene in France has an extraordinary power that has generated great talents capable of bringing to the stage a style born in the street, thus transforming how dance is understood. One of these names is Kader Attou, artistic director, dancer and choreographer of Cie Accrorap, formed in 1989 by him and other seminal names in current French dance such as Eric Mezino, Chaouki Saïd, Mourad Merzouki and Lionel Frédoc. The contemporary nature, the mix of cultures and a humanistic background are the hallmarks of this creator, who is also the director of the Centre Chorégraphique National de La Rochelle and who is influenced as much by hip-hop as by the arts of the circus, contemporary dance and the arts of the image. His choreographies break down barriers between genres to touch on very interesting highly topical subjects like Douar. In the piece that we shall see at the Grec, Attou choreographs a number of Algerian dancers who speak to us in the language of movement about these dreams that, on both shores of the Mediterranean Sea, inspire exile and migration. The artist avoids commonplaces and clichés in order to talk to us about the boredom, the feeling of being imprisoned and the dreams of freedom of young Algerians, but also about the difficulties encountered by other young people, those living in France, in assuming the dual culture in which they have grown up.
