Producer, arranger, musician, persecuted for his political ideas... the imprint on the music world left by Fela Kuti, the eccentric inventor of Afro beat, is too important to be easily swept away. Eight years after his death, Kuti continues to be hugely admired by musicians working in many different fields, who recognise his extraordinary importance as one of the most charismatic showmen to emerge in recent decades. With his dream of a free, democratic, socialist Africa, Kuti was much more than just a star in the musical firmament. The voice of poor Nigeria, he was persecuted by his own government, becoming an important symbol. Tonight, friends and admirers take the Poble Espanyol stage to pay homage to the man and his works.
