In a show steeped in cinematic references, dramaturg and director Àlex Mañas uses live music, drama and audiovisual resources to evoke the last days of a composer trapped in exile.
Musician and composer Béla Bartók has been forced to flee his native country, Hungary, and come to New York with his wife, Dita, in order to escape the Nazi regime. With little money in his pockets and ever-worsening health, Bartók tries to finish compositions into which traditional music from the land he loves but which has permitted barbarity constantly appears. For just one night, fever and sleep create a magical, dreamlike atmosphere in which Oriol Algueró and Sergi Alpiste give a live performance of Bartók’s 44 duos for two violins. The narrative provided by two actors, Rosa Renom and Lluís Marco, put into words the contradictions, homesickness, the war and the illness that torment the composer, whilst a series of images are project to illustrate the expressionist aesthetic. The biography in music and drama of a composer in search of his identity.
