The two leading characters in this story live on a place full of clothes: this is Beatriu. They are very aware that many would like to be in their place. At Beatriu, they have everything they need, and they know that many people go through hell to get there, but the two of them are also aware of the fact that they cannot leave Beatriu, that the vultures are watching, and won't let them escape. At Beatriu, they’re happy.
We’ve run out of transcendental myths to accompany us on our quest for the Promised Land. Do we in the West truly take advantage of the opportunities we have? We blame society for our weaknesses, we blame our parents for our behaviour patterns, we blame astrology for our fortunes. Are we the only ones responsible for our failure to find that longed-for happiness? Or is there something else holding us back? Either way, we do have choices, but what about those who don't? This is the reality of young Africans arriving in their Promised Land on a small boat.
Over the course of the centuries, this is an issue that has been touched on by many authors: Virgil tells us of the great epic journey of Aeneas who flees Troy and sets off for the “Promised Land”, and in the Divina Comèdia Dante tells of his journey through hell, purgatory and paradise, where, by the way, Beatriu awaits him. The show takes as its starting point the heroic deeds of the protagonists of these great works and looks at the great journeys undertaken by today’s new heroes to reach their own Beatriu, their own Promised Land.
The company )e( espai en construcció tells stories in a powerful language all of its own, one that is sensitive and poetic. In this production, there is a cello player on the stage, and the set design turns Beatriu into a poetic space that's full of items of clothing. The integration of music as if it were another character in the story is one of the characteristics of this theatre company formed by actress and creator Maite Bassa, producer and creator Elisenda Ribó, actor, creator and director Roger Ribó, actress and creator Blanca Solé and actor and creator Miquel Tamarit. With diverse careers that have taken them to the stages of Barcelona, Madrid, London and Edinburgh, the members of the theatre company )e( espai en construcció are the creators of theatre productions such as Et vindré a tapar (2014) and Si jo no hi fos (la festa seria més divertida) (2017), both of which premièred at the Sala la Vilella, which has since closed.
