How did a silent movie become a hit in the twenty-first century? One key to its success is a superb soundtrack, a score that its composers and the OBC now perform live as the film itself is shown on screen.
When he first pitched the idea, many took film director Michel Hazanavicius for a madman. A silent movie in black and white appeared to have little chance of attracting spectators used to colour and often deafening sound... Few imagined that the story of an actor and a dancer, set at the time when “talkies” were taking over the film industry, could be a worldwide hit in 2011. This success was due, in part, to the superb soundtrack created by composer and pianist Ludovic Bource and conducted by Erns van Tiel. In these two sessions at L’Auditori, the film will be shown as Bource and van Tiel perform the score live, accompanied by an ensemble as exceptional as it is versatile: the Barcelona Symphony and Catalonia National Orchestra. As a result, a first-class ensemble of musicians will play a soundtrack that won an Oscar, a Golden Globe, a BAFTA, a European Film Award and a Caesar. Perfect music to enrich a story about love and the struggle for success enriched by plenty of comedy touches.
