Fusing sounds from India with a wide range of cultural traditions, this composer and sitar player, one of the great figures on the world music scene today, pays homage to her father, Ravi Shankar.
According to her friend and collaborator, the musician Nitin Sawhney, few performers embody the spirit of innovation and experimentation like Anoushka Shankar. This spirit no doubt comes to her through her father, who died in 2012 whilst Anoushka Shankar was recording the album she now presents. Ravi Shankar not only played at the legendary Woodstock Festival, but also helped to introduce the sitar into western music through his friendship with outstanding musicians, from Yehudi Menuhin to George Harrison, from John Coltrane to Philip Glass. Anoushka is not content to merely conserve the legacy of her father, considered by many to have created world music; she also expands it, by fusing the sounds of India with jazz, electronica and – on the album Traveller – flamenco. Now, on the album Traces of You, released in 2013, this sister of the US artist Norah Jones (who features on one track) continues to blend different rhythms, different cultures, in a repertoire at once heterogeneous and cohesive, effortlessly fusing her sitar with cello, guitar, piano and electronic sounds.
