Brilliant irony and deep desperation are the essential elements in the writing of novelist and playwright Thomas Bernhard, whose last work, My Prizes, inspires this play.
His is a fascinating world in which there is no shortage of humour, but behind this humour lurks, always, a dark desperate vision of culture and, in short, life itself. Thomas Bernhard never hesitates to explore human wounds to study their extent, both in such bleak plays as Ritter, Dene, Voss and novels like Correction, to name but two of his works. The last books that Bernhard left ready for publication was My Prizes, a collection of nine short stories in which literary creation and the author’s life are frequently linked. Pep Tosar takes these stories as his starting point to talk about the life and work of a writer who, oddly enough, hated prizes and, though he never refused them or turned down the money, often irritated those that awarded such accolades with his acidic acceptance speeches.
