Cementary

Cities and the ways humans inhabit them (or not) is the subject of this new show by a young Greek company that uses powerful language to create an urban ballet set on the streets of an imaginary city.

In earlier productions, such as ERA poVERA and Planites, the Aerites Dance Company used the urban landscape as a place of conflict or the scene for the movement of characters in a permanent process of migration. Now, in this latest show, the city and how we inhabit it or use its empty spaces is once more the protagonist. What does it mean to have no home and to live on the street? What meaning do empty spaces have in a city? How can we reuse them and what kind of dance can we perform in them? Perhaps cities, at a time of crisis when the prosperity of the past has become a dream that will not return, will become huge cement cemeteries, as the title of this piece seems to suggest. For Cementary is set in an imaginary city in a future time, a scene that serves the company to suggest a reflection on our own times. They do so by using a contradictory and provocative language, but one that all spectators can identify with, recreating a future of war, chaos and disorder.

Cementary is the latest production by a company founded in 2006 by Patricia Apergi and Dimitris Chalazonitis, whose shows, built on a theoretical and dramaturgical base, are aimed at exploring movement. The fusion of dance, performing arts, poetry, theatre and the new technologies is the calling card of a company that has performed on stages and at festivals around the world.
