Born in Lloret de Marin 1962, Xavier Albertí combines his work in the theatre as actor, director and manager with activities based on his wide musical knowledge. Moreover, he holds a post-graduate qualification in stage direction from the Theatre Institute, which also awarded him its Extraordinary Prize for Dramatic Art.

Albertí has received many theatrical awards, including: the Adrià Gual National Prize (1991); the Critics' Special Award (1994-95); the Barcelona Theatre Critics' Award for Best Director (1993-94); the Serra d'Or Prize (1994-95); the Valencia Critics' Award (2003); the Cipriano de Rivas Cherif Prize (2004); and three Butaca prizes, including the award for Quality and Savoir Faire for his Grec Festival programming. Besides playing countless stage roles, moreover, he has also directed plays and operas at venues in Barcelona and all over Europe, as well as at many international festivals, including: the Grec, the Edinburgh Festival, Sitges International Festival, the Castell de Peralada Festival, Temporada Alta in Girona, the Caracas International Festival, the Buenos Aires Festival and the Cervantino Festival in Guanajuato (Mexico).

During his long theatre career, Albertí has regularly worked closely with the playwright Lluïsa Cunillé (2010 National Dramatic Literature Prize), their work together including productions from Libración (1994) to El bordell  (2008), as well as collaborations to adapt such texts for the stage as, amongst others, Terenci Moix's memoirs, El pes de la palla (2004) and El dúo de la africana (2007).

A firm supporter of contemporary drama, he has also premiered works by such writers as Narcís Comadira, Paco Zarzoso, José Sanchis Sinisterra and Josep Maria Benet i Jornet.

Xavier Albertí was director of the Grec Festival from 1996 to 1999, overseeing enormous growth in terms of numbers of venues and performances programmed, as well as making a clear commitment to diversity, risk and contemporary art. Moreover, this was a period that saw the festival expand around Barcelona Metropolitan Area.

Since his spell in charge of the Grec, Albertí has continued his indefatigable activities as actor, director, teacher and manager. In July 2013 he was appointed artistic director of the National Theatre of Catalonia (TNC).
