A debate on the need to defend cultural rights without separating this from the fight for digital rights, and not only because the digital environment is increasingly present in our lives. In both cases, they are striving for democracy, access and participation, decision-making, individual and collective empowerment. To speak of digital rights is also to speak of diversities, and therefore the fight against homogenisation, which is closely associated with commercialisation.
But how can digital and cultural rights be implemented in an environment controlled by a very small number of large platforms and transnational companies based on extractivism? What role do public administrations play and what is the role of cultural institutions?
Participating in the debate:
Fieke Jansen, PhD from the School of Journalism, Media and Culture at the University of Cardiff and the Data Justice Lab.
Francesca Bria, an economist specialising in innovation and an expert on digital policies.
Toni Navarro, a philosopher specialising in gender and technology.
Moderated by Eva Soria, Director of Innovation, Knowledge and Visual Arts at the Barcelona Institute of Culture.
