Ester Bonal Sarró

Ester Bonal Sarró (Barcelona, 1964) is a music teacher and choir conductor. She started singing at the age of five in the choir of the ARC Música Foundation, of which she is now a member of the Board of Trustees. She graduated from the University of Barcelona, obtained her teacher training certificate (CAP) in 1991 and worked in secondary education for 10 years as a music teacher. Between 1996 and 2001 she taught at the Miquel Tarradell secondary school in the Raval neighbourhood. She has conducted Esquitx, the children’s choir of Barcelona’s Sant Jordi Choir, and also the children’s and girls’ choirs at the Municipal Music School (EMM) Can Ponsic. Since 2002 she has been a lecturer in the Department of Education at the Escola Superior de Música de Catalunya (ESMUC).

From 2001 to 2008 she was head of studies at the EMM Can Ponsic, which is run by the ARC Música Foundation. In 2004 she launched Xamfrà, a music and stage centre for social inclusion in Barelona’s Raval neighbourhood. And to ensure its sustainability, in 2013 she set up the online space El Teler de Música, a social enterprise with musical teaching resources. Since 2017 she has been running the EducARTs project, part of the Barcelona Neighbourhood Plan. It is a socio-educational project that introduces the arts as tools for managing emotions in primary and secondary schools in Barcelona North. She is also a member of the Secretariat of Children’s Choirs of Catalonia.

In 2014 she won one of the Civic Action Prizes awarded by the Lluís Carulla Foundation. In 2019 she received the AEMCAT (Catalonia Association of Music Teachers) Career Award. And in 2020 she was awarded the National Culture Prize by the CoNCA (National Arts and Culture Council).
