View of the city from one of the paths that crosses the mountain.

Walks to discover the paths of Montjuïc

Fundació Joan Miró proposes free walks through the mountain to discover old paths and trails.

Do you know Botxí’s path? And Satalia’s path? Montjuïc is full of paths and trails that give you a good opportunity to get to know the mountain in depth (in the picture. Photo: Pep Herrero) while you take a walk at your own pace, whenever and however you want.

You will discover a large park that speaks of the Barcelona of more than a century ago and of a mountain full of springs and picnic areas that were used for relaxation by a population that lived in a loud, dark and unhygienic environment and that sought out the sun and nature on free days. At the mountain huts, people used to dance, play music and play cards. And, of course, the mountain was an ideal place for strolling, crossed by historic paths. Some of them have disappeared, others have changed their route, but there are some that still remain, keeping alive the atmosphere of the past.

Fundació Joan Miró Barcelona website not only introduces you to one of the great art centres of the Montjuïc mountain and the fabulous exhibitions that can be seen there, but also invites you to exercise and get to know a mountain that is fundamental to the history of the city, through the paths that create it.

You will be able to explore the history of this green space transformed during the 1929 International Exhibition but very important for the city as a whole from the first days of its foundation. This is where the stone was taken to build the city and, in the old quarries, unique facilities are still to be found today.

A bunch of paths have the Miró Foundation as origin or destination. For example, the path of the Teatre Grec takes you from this scenic space (the old Machinet stone quarry) to the art centre, going (although the route is not accessible for people with reduced mobility) along the delightful steps of the Generalife. Along the way, you will find a Music Pavilion where you can take shelter if it rains.

If you prefer, there is also the Camí de la Satalia, which follows the old Camí de València and leads to the Foundation. Streets that wind their way through the old stone quarries show spectacular gardens full of beautiful trees and acacias. Visit, if you can, what remains of the old Satalia spring, one of the many in the mountain. The path, which is not accessible either, will take you to the Jardins de Joan Prats, where there is a fountain and a picnic area.

The magnificent Laribal Gardens, finally, are a very interesting walk, with a stop at the Font del Gat fountain. They were part of a property belonging to a well-known lawyer from the beginning of the 20th century that was acquired by the Town Council.

If you want to discover the old paths of the mountain, come to Montjuïc Park, but first check the information about the routes on the website of the Fundació Joan Miró Barcelona.
