New proposals at 'Els Vespres d'Hivern'
The cycle's 17th edition introduces emerging musicians such as Flamenco Queer, Anna Mieke, Maria Hein and Nil Ciuró.
Els Vespres d'Hivern, the Universitat de Barcelona's proposal for emerging artists, is back. The success of past editions shows that the programme has become a must in the city. The cooperative L'Afluen, which is also in charge of the artistic direction of the Barcelona Assió Musical (BAM) de la Mercè, is organising this year's edition, which maintains the event's inherently risky, open and transversal spirit. Its vision has been broadened with the incorporation of the content curatorial team. The concerts, free of charge, will take place every Friday evening in February in the Paraninmf of the University's Historic Building (on the first floor; entrance from the main foyer).
Flamenco Queer will perform on 4 February, and tickets are already sold out. Dancer Rubén Heras and guitarist Jero Férec are proposing a series of vindictive dialogues through performance, music and aesthetics that rejects gender binarism. It also recalls the confluence of the queer, transvestite and flamenco community that developed in the Raval and Poble-sec neighbourhoods at the beginning of the century.
On the 11th, it is Anna Mieke's turn. The voice of the new Irish indie-folk scene will perform as a trio to sing the brilliant songs from the album Idle Mind. Their inspiration comes from a colourful experience learning Maori songs in New Zealand and folk songs in Bulgaria, cycling around Europe, living in Granada and playing the cello in the experimental improvisation group HEX. Tickets will be available from 27 January.
On the 18th, the Mallorcan singer-songwriter Maria Hein — winner of the Enderrock 2021 award for best song and best new artist — will present her first album, Continent i contingut, published by Hidden Records: 10 songs through which she shares her thoughts, problems, doubts and certainties, like a cup that has begun to overflow and needs to let the water run out. You can find tickets through this link from 3 February.
The cycle will close on 25 February with the pianist, composer and producer Nil Ciuró and his fusion of minimalism, contemporary music and experimentation. Ciuró will arrive with an outstanding new work at his fingertips: Oversoul, released by the Swedish label 1631 Recordings. Starting on 10 February, you can request your tickets here.
Tickets will be issued progressively until reaching maximum capacity. Concerts will begin at 8 p.m., with doors opening at 7.30 p.m for a punctual start.
