A portrait of the artist

Transformations from the roots

A dance cycle at the Mercat de les Flors brings to the stage artists who renew dance from tradition.

Juan Carlos Lérida, Laila Tafur, Manuel Liñán... These are just some of the creators and makers of dance and movement who take to the Mercat de les Flors these days to express themselves with avant-garde languages, but with their roots firmly planted in the ground. They form part of the Radical d'Arrel cycle and await you between 3 April and 3 May.

Traditional celebrations, for example, are both the starting point for María del Mar Suárez La Chachi, from an Andalusian background, and for Laia Santanach, from a Catalan one, in the shows Lâs alegries (3 and 4 April) and Jarana (from 10 to 13 April), respectively.  Don't miss the festival of flamenco pals by La Chachi or the temporary transgression of Laila Tafur who, in the show Maja i bastarda (5 and 6 April) is capable of singing Witney Houston from a tablao.

Juan Carlos Lérida, from his part, one of the most radical flamenco transgressors, presents Cher (from 4 to 6 April; pictured), a kind of variety show with the name of a North American artist that stems from the concept of this software that fixes vocal slips. The choreographic proposal aims to be ‘an auto-tune for out-of-tune things’.

Come to Ovidi Montllor square (behind the Market) on 6 April (12 noon) and see the dancers of Esbart Rocasagna perform a choreography by Quim Pujol, Era. At 1 p.m., inside the Market, the artist will share the process of creating the choreography you have seen. And in the afternoon, once again in the Plaça d'Ovidi Montllor, the platform L'Esbord presents the creation L'Hereu Riera, between tradition and contemporary dance.

Brothers Víctor and Raúl Pérez Armero (Rel i Grapa, 26th and 27th April), finally, combine movement and music to talk about shared memory. And Manuel Liñán closes the cycle between the 1st and 3rd of May with Muerta de amor, in which he transforms the copla and brings it up to date with new sounds and structures to talk to us about love.

If you want to meet the artists who are part of the Radical d'Arrel cycle, come to Mercat de les Flors, but first check the website for all the information about the scheduled performances.
