Special Orthodox New Year's Eve to the rhythm of the Barcelona Gipsy balKan Orchestra

A reinterpretation of the music of the Balkans and the Middle East is brought to Sala Apolo by this international group.

After a year-long wait — the concert was scheduled for January 13, 2022, but the pandemic made it impossible to go ahead— the Barcelona Gipsy balKan Orchestra (BGKO) is taking the stage of the Sala Apolo and inviting attendees to celebrate the start to the new year in an orthodox way. As part of the Mil·lenni Festival program, the concert will take place on Friday, January 13, beginning at 9 p.m., with doors opening an hour before.

The BGKO is made up of a group of musicians — Margherita Abita (voice), Julien Chanal (guitar), Ivan Kovacevic (double bass), Stelios Togias (percussion), Dani Carbonell (clarinet), Oleksandr Sora (violin), Pere Nolasc Turu (violin) and Fernando Salines (accordion) — from different origins who offer a reinterpretation of the traditional sounds of the Balkans, the Middle East and part of the Mediterranean. With more than a thousand concerts over more than a decade of experience and a legion of loyal followers, the band is a benchmark in the traditional music scene, thanks to its commitment to a contemporary and personal sound that seeks to explore different timbres and sounds through the contribution of each of its members. Their latest album, Nova Era, was published in 2020 and includes the work of Sicilian vocalist Margherita Abita. Its 13 songs, in words of the band, connect them with the past and project them into the future. "With this work, the BGKO has once again shown how it is capable of surviving and evolving, despite the individual choices of its members and the historical situation of the world," they said.
