Sixth Year of Youthful Perspectives in Audiovisual Culture

Barcelona's CaixaForum and the Filmoteca de Catalunya will host the Reteena Festival from November 24th to December 3rd.

The sixth edition of Reteena, the Young Audiovisual Festival of Barcelona, kicks off, an event directed by Maria Castellví and Clàudia Mera, awarded the City of Barcelona Prize in 2021. It is a space to discover and experience current audiovisual culture through screenings and activities such as roundtable discussions, workshops, and masterclasses. All of this will take place between CaixaForum Barcelona (from November 24th to 26th) and the Filmoteca de Catalunya (from December 1st to 3rd).

The program offers a selection of films and short films from emerging local talent, as well as internationally recognised works from festivals that provide diverse perspectives on youth. Reteena presents six films in the official section produced this year: "Negu Hurbilak" by the Negu Collective; "Robot Dreams" by Pablo Berger; "Los demás" by Alexandra Hyland; "Another body" by Sophie Compton and Reuben Hamlyn; "Io capitano" by Matteo Garrone; and "How to have sex" by Molly Manning Walker.

In the Essentials section, films from previous years are screened, including "But I’m a Cheerleader," 1999, by Jamie Babbit; "Ladybird," 2017, by Greta Gerwig; "Scream," 1996, by Wes Craven; and "Ghost World," 2001, by Terry Zwigoff. Two days of short film screenings are also dedicated to the Talent Jove program.

In addition to film screenings, three masterclasses are dedicated to the cinema of Greta Gerwig with Clàudia Munuera; a session on the casting method known as self-tape with Alícia Verdés; and one on the legends of underground comics, led by the Joso School of Illustration.

Moreover, roundtable discussions will cover topics related to coordinating intimacy in film shoots, the figure of femme fatales in film noir, pop divas and love (and heartbreak), the soundtrack of the series "La Mesías" by Javier Ambrossi and Javier Calvo, with Raül Refree and the group Hidrogenesse, and finally, a space to discuss fashion and the most iconic styling of Samantha Hudson and how these contribute to creating narratives and breaking stereotypes.

This year's workshops are linked to topics such as creating audiovisual content with generative artificial intelligence, podcast initiation with "Hacerse la peli," by Rocío Marchetti and Sara Lasauca, script creation in the Script Battle, and a photography workshop on portraiture and macro photography.

The film festival dedicated to the seventh art with themes that resonate with young audiences will occur from November 24th to 26th at CaixaForum and from December 1st to 3rd at the Filmoteca de Catalunya. Timings vary depending on the sessions, and a day pass provides access to all activities on that day. When purchasing, you can reserve specific activities, as spaces are limited, and prices range from €5 to €7 (tickets for screenings at the Filmoteca will be available soon). If you want to buy tickets, you can do so from the Reteena Festival website.
