The ‘sentimental museum’ of the Plaça de Sant Iu
A themed guided tour of the Marès Museum allows you to rediscover a collection of everyday objects from the 19th century.
Perhaps you have already visited the collections of the Frederic Marès Museum, but perhaps they have never explained in detail what you are seeing. Now you have the opportunity to get a glimpse of the daily life of the 19th-century Barcelona bourgeoisie on the guided tour Unusual objects from the collector's cabinet. Next dates, 15 March and 20 December.
The visit will show you in a different way what life was like in the 19th century in one of Barcelona's most prominent families. You will see objects that were frequently used in the past and that today, in some cases, have lost their use, but that tell us about life in the past. Attention, there are about 50,000 objects that the sculptor and collector Frederic Marès collected during his life and which form part of what he called his ‘sentimental museum’.
The visit Objectes insòlits del gabinet del col-leccionista is one of the most applauded by visitors, but there are many more. Coming soon (12 April and 18 October; 6,50 €), you can also visit the sentimental museum of Marès in Un museu de novel-la, a literary tour that relates objects from the collection with well-known works of Catalan literature.
However, if you like to walk around, remember that on 17 May and 20 September (10 € per person) not only a visit to Marès' studio-library is being organised, but also a Marès route, that is to say, a stroll through parts of the city that are closely related to this collector and artist. On 28 June (5 €), at La maleta del col-leccionista, you can review the history of the Frederic Marès collection; and on 19 July, at La bellesa ideal (5 €), they talk about the survival of the classical world in the museum's collections. Finally, on 22 November (5 €), at Les obres mestres de la col-lecció Marès, you can take a tour focusing on the most valuable works kept here.
If you would like to know more about the collection of the Marès Museum, come and take the guided tour Objets insòlits del gabinet del col-leccionista or one of the others planned for the near future, but first check the website for more information and make a reservation.
