A modern time 'Romeo and Juliet'

La Brutal company's version of Shakespeare's classic, directed by David Selvas and with dramaturgy by Joan Yago, is back to the theatre.

It is said that one of the reasons William Shakespeare's texts continue to be performed successfully around the world is that they touch upon universal and deeply human themes. But this doesn't mean that, without touching a single comma, it cannot be given more contemporary intentionality, more in line with today's society, in this case, Western 21st century. Romeo and Juliet, which will return to the Teatre Poliorama stage on 17 October — it was there last June and August — aims to be a reflection, in the words of director David Selvas, that "the hetero-patriarchal culture has always been in charge of telling us who can and cannot be desired. And anything that is not within the canon they dictate can be disqualified and insulted". Thus, the love story full of barriers between the two protagonists of the drama can be a mirror, for example, of many non-heteronormative relationships that still, to this day, suffer violence from certain parts of society. "With their union, rivalry can come to an end and, therefore, a new scenario can be opened up where outdated structures are banished. This is the true and profound conflict of the play," says Selvas.

The production, signed by La Brutal and dramaturgy by Joan Yago, brings together the actors and actresses Emma ArquilluéNil CardonerGuillem BalartAnna Barrachina (in some performances replaced by Gemma Brió), Albert BaróPau EscobarAdrian GrösserXavi Ricart and Andrew Tarbet. The Catalan adaptation is by Yannick Garcia Porres. It is a contemporary and not very romantic version of the text, according to the company, and it will only be on stage on Mondays and Tuesdays until 8 November.
