All of Magritte's surrealism in 65 paintings

Retrospective at the CaixaForum dedicated to the fascinating world of the Belgian artist.

It will probably be one of the most visited exhibitions in Barcelona this spring. La Màquina Magritte gathers 65 paintings from different museums and collections from around the world, painted by the Belgian artist René Magritte, a surrealist painter and a forerunner of pop and conceptual art. You will find this retrospective at the CaixaForum Barcelona until 6 June.

Where does the name of this exhibition come from? Magritte wrote in 1950, together with some friends, a leaflet named La Manufacture de Poésie, a catalogue of imaginary products amongst which there was the 'Universal Machine to create paintings'. According to the catalogue, the machine made it possible to compose an unlimited number of thinking pictures. The exhibition in CaixaForum, organised in collaboration with the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum and curated by Guillermo Solana, is based on the hypothesis that the machine exists and that it "consists of several interconnected devices that correspond to recurring concepts in the artist's work, such as mimicry and megalomania", according to the programme. Born in Lessines in 1898 and died in Brussels in 1967, René Magritte is the author of a surprising body of work that plays with visual logic and makes the viewer question the categories of perception. The selection of paintings on display at CaixaForum, many of which are already icons of art, is a good example of the Belgian's artistic contribution. The works are complemented in the exhibition by interesting photographs and home movies made by Magritte himself.
