Barcelona, world capital of the piano during the Maria Canals International Music Competition.
Grand pianos will be set up at different locations in the city to celebrate the event.
You may have been surprised by the sight of people sitting down to play the piano in metro stations and other city-wide locations all over Barcelona. The reason behind the presence of these instruments is the Maria Canals International Music Competition, which is celebrating its 65th edition under the slogan “Maria Canals porta cua". You’ll find pianos bearing signs like ‘Play me, I’m yours…’ in a variety of original locations, including Born Centre Cultural, La Pedrera, Palau Robert, the Ateneu Barcelonès, Plaça Catalunya, the Liceu opera house, Illa Diagonal shopping centre, Portal de l’Àngel, Hospital Vall d’Hebron and Porxos d’en Xifré.
The competition also brings the world’s best young pianists to the city for the different rounds that are held at Palau de la Música Catalana, as well as a cycle of free performances by professional musicians. The competition will take place from 24 March to 4 April.
The activities included in the “Maria Canals porta cua" programme are open to the public and free of charge, while tickets for the different rounds of the competition range from €5 to €35 and are available for purchase at the following link.
