The Weimar Republic was a small fragment of hope. A period in which society awoke with a critical spirit after the convulsive Great War. Marked by tensions and a tragic end, it established a cultural foundation based on overflowing renewal and creativity. The Weimar Republic thus shattered stereotypes and posed totally unexplored questions that were transmuted into works of art of great expressiveness and incandescence. 

CaixaForum presents Uncertain Times. Germany between the wars, an exhibition that brings together the broad artistic testimony and cultural wealth that existed between 1919 and 1933. Artists such as Thomas Mann, Käthe Kollwitz, Otto Dix and Jeanne Mammen gave life to a world of intense emotional charge, where uncertainty became the core of a revolutionary period. In this social context of constant exploration, gender roles, the notion of authority and aesthetics were completely transformed, marking a break with established conventions. A fruitful context in which art became a vehicle for expressing the tension between the past and the future, between order and chaos, between reconstruction and the concerns of a new era.

Uncertain Times. Germany between wars brings together a selection of paintings, sculptures, photographs and other forms of artistic expression that emerged in this period of German history, creating a visual dialogue between abstraction and figuration, crisis and hope.
