Dancing eggs for Corpus Christi

When spring reaches its peak, Barcelona celebrates one of its oldest popular festivals, crowned by the ritual of the dancing egg.

The Feast of Corpus Christi is one of the oldest ones still being celebrated in Barcelona. Its history harks to the medieval city and a time when religion was a way of structuring society and politics. The feast culminated the liturgical cycle that began with Lent and Easter. Behind the festival of Corpus there are 600 years of history marked by two main activities: the spring procession, and the dancing egg, a tradition that is deeply ingrained but of uncertain origin, which consists of depositing eggs in the jets of water fountains and watching them dance.

Corpus Christi, which runs from 31 May to 3 June, is also an excuse to stroll through Barcelona and explore different spaces and institutions which hold open days to host the ritual of the dancing eggs. For example, you can visit places that are usually off limits, such as all of the gardens of the Maritime Museum and the Captaincy General of Barcelona. You will also enjoy free access to the Monastery of Pedralbes, the Parish Church of Santa Anna, the Ateneu gardens, the Frederic Marés Museum and the Town Hall.
