The Year of the Bull on the Chinese calendar
The start of the Chinese New Year will take place on February 11 and Barcelona will hold a series of events which will take place online.
On February 11, Barcelona will celebrate the arrival of the Chinese New Year, which this year welcomes the Year of the Bull. Traditionally, the central event of the celebration consisted of a large parade through the streets of the Districte de l’Eixample, which, unfortunately, will not be able to be held this year, just as in 2020, due to COVID-19. However, the organisation has developed a different program to be able to enjoy the celebration safely.
From the 11th to the 26th of February, a series of activities will take place with the involvement of the participating entities related to traditional Chinese culture. The same Thursday 11, betevé (Barcelona’s broadcasting network) will broadcast Wong Kar-wai's film, The grandmaster. There will also be three online workshops, one to learn how to make lanterns (Feb 17), an introduction to Chinese (Feb 18) and another about paper cutting (Feb 19). As a novelty of this edition, the program includes lectures that will be held through online rooms, such as the ‘From China to Barcelona: young entrepreneurship’ (Feb 18) and also ‘Chinese tourism and Barcelona: experiences and initiatives for recovery’ (Feb 25).
All activities are free and most of them require prior registration. On the Chinese New Year website you will find the full program and also the multimedia section, where you can retrieve videos from past activities.
