An image of the dock and the Rellotge Tower years before the refurbishment

The Barcelona of fishermen

The refurbishment of the Fisherman's Wharf in the Old Port opens to the public, with a new space from which to follow the arrival of the fish and the subsequent auction.

A new fish market of more than 3. 200 square metres which has already been occupied by the Fishermen's Guild and which allows the public and visitors to follow the arrival of the fishermen at the port and the subsequent sale of fish can be visited from the end of February, as part of the opening to the public of the remodelled Fishermen's Mill (in the picture, a photograph of the mill before the refurbishment by Antonio Lajusticia Bueno). Soon, you will also be able to see the Torre del Rellotge... close by!

The moll de Pescadors, until now closed to the public, is an area of about 25,000 square metres of the Port Vell. The works have included an access to the brand new fishermen's market from where people who wish to do so can see, in the early hours of the morning, the arrival of the fishermen's boats and the subsequent auction. The aim is to publicise the work that fishermen do (there are approximately 250 fishermen in Barceloneta who still fish) and to make seafaring culture available to the public.

For the moment, it has yet to be defined how the visits will be organised, but a system will also be set up so that, within the framework of the remodelled area, visitors will also be able to walk to the Torre del Rellotge.

Citizens will therefore be able to get a close-up view of a building that has been declared a cultural asset of local interest and has a history of more than 250 years. At some point it will be possible to see inside, but in a guided and controlled manner, as this building is very special. It was the first lighthouse in Barcelona, in 1772, and one of the first in the Mediterranean. In 1904, it was reconverted into a lighthouse.

Work to improve the facilities at the moll de Pescadors began a few years ago and its first improvement was the inauguration of a new ice factory. From being one of the most obsolete facilities of this type, it has become a leading facility in terms of sustainability.

Do you want to get to know the new Fisherman's Dock? Then come and take a stroll, but first check out the information about the space on the Port of Barcelona website and find out much more about the Llotja where the fish is auctioned and about the Torre del Rellotge, on the website of the Confraria de Pescadors de Barcelona (Barcelona Fishermen's Guild).
