An evening with Picasso’s works, for free

Ajuntament de Barcelona

The Barcelona museum dedicated to the artist is open free of charge until October at the end of the day, three days a week.

Are you thirsty for art? Well, at the Museu Picasso they offer you open bar! It will only be for a few hours, in the evenings, and only a few days a week, but in this way the museum will effectively make its collections available to all the public, whether or not they have their pockets full. From now until October, Picasso convida!

If you have never been to the museum, now you have no excuse, because on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays, between 7 and 9 p.m., it will be showing the works of an artist with a great love for Barcelona, the city where he spent his formative years before leaving for Paris. The institution came into being as a result of the agreement between the artist and the city in the 1950s and the City Council’s attempts at the time to limit the deterioration of La Ribera, the neighbourhood where the museum is located and where Picasso had lived.

Which paintings did he create in Barcelona and which in Paris? You will see if you visit the museum’s permanent collection: from the view of the Barceloneta Beach to Mrs. Canals or the well-known portrait of Jaume Sabartés with ruff and hat, to mention just a few.

But the museum will not only tell you about Picasso, but also about his friends and lovers such as Fernande Olivier, one of the artist’s first companions (she left a very good written testimony about their relationship) to whom the exhibition “Fernande Olivier: Picasso and his friends” is dedicated. You will discover an artist, model and writer who shared with the author the Paris of the beginning of the 20th century.

Finally, until September you can also see the “Paisatges catalans de Picasso”, photographic portraits of the landscapes that he painted, taken by the French photographer Bernard Plossu.

If you want to get a taste of Picasso’s world, come to his Barcelona museum before 1 October on the fixed days and times and enjoy the permanent collection and the temporary exhibitions. Before you come, however, check the information on the Picasso Museum‘s website.
