More resources for the renovation and enlargement of cultural facilities

The next few years will see the Government of Catalonia and Barcelona City Council invest 63 million and 61 million euros respectively.

In the meeting between the Mayor, Jaume Collboni, and the Minister for Culture, Sònia Hernández, the two institutions looked at the implementation of agreements on culture reached in the last meeting by the Joint Commission, notably:

Renovation and enlargement of the Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya (MNAC)

A hundred million euros will be used to enlarge the MNAC. This will include ethe renovation of the facilities at the Palau Nacional and the addition of the Pavelló Victòria Eugènia as an exhibition space. The two also undertook to manage the commitments of the State Administration for funding the improvement and enlargement project. The work comes within the hundredth anniversary of the International Expo of 1929 in Montjuïc.

Second stage of the enlargement of the Museu d’Art Contemporani de Barcelona (MACBA)

An initial stage of work is already under way to enlarge the museum, which includes 2,110 square metres of exhibition space, a gallery, storerooms and facilities. To progress to the second part of this process, the Government of Catalonia will provide a total of five million euros between 2025 and 2027.

Participation of the Government of Catalonia in the Central Library of Catalonia

The possibility of the Government of Catalonia making the Central Library part of the Barcelona library network consortium will be studied, and it becoming part of the Biblioteques de Barcelona network.

Ten million euros to complete the improvement work at the Mercat de les Flors

A second part of the improvement work to the Mercat de les Flors will be carried out from 2026, involving the Sala Maria Aurèlia Capmany and taking three years to complete. The estimated budget is ten million euros, with the City Council to provide 60% and the Government of Catalonia, 40%.
