A cycle of concerts, film screenings and routes to turn Park Güell into one of the main focal points for the summer in Barcelona.

Barcelona’s earliest radio broadcasts, plus tributes to Josep Anselm Clavé and Ventura Pons… This summer, anybody wishing to enjoy a diverse and refreshing range of activities that have much to do with the history of the city will find various options from 27 June to the end of September at Park Güell, one of the sites managed by the Museu d’Història de Barcelona set to fill with music and film.

Entitled “MUHBA & Park Güell: música, ràdio, Barcelona”, the museum’s summer programme in the evenings will remember the choral tradition inspired by the legacy of Josep Anselm Clavé, pay homage to the centenary of the first radio broadcasts in Barcelona (10 October 1924, from the now disappeared Hotel Colón in Plaça Catalunya), offer a film cycle devoted the director Ventura Pons, who passed away this year, and the possibility of an in-depth look at the site conceived by Antoni Gaudí.

As for music, concerts start on 27 June and will be held on four consecutive Thursdays in Plaça Natura inside the park (in the image, the terrace with views across Barcelona. Photo: Mònica Moreno). The concerts all begin at 8.30 pm and are free, but with booking required. This first is devoted to Josep Anselm Clavé and is entitled Josep Anselm Clavé i el seu temps: Renaixença, associacionisme i república. Canendi Elegantia, a group of eight male voices performing the polyphonic repertoire of early music, take centre stage for this concert. The second concert is on 4 July, with the Granollers Chamber Choir paying tribute to Josep Anton Clavé, who introduced and first promoted the art of choir singing in Catalonia. The concert is entitled Venim de Clavé!. Advance booking is required to attend.

Some of the most renowned music in Catalonia includes the jazz in store on 11 July and produced by Barcelona Jazz Revival, in the concert Barcelona, capital del jazz. Finally, musicians from the Ars Movens network will be offering the concert Clàssics a la radio on 18 July, a tribute to a century of radio in Barcelona. Advance booking is required to attend.

Besides the music at Park Güell, there’s also a cycle entitled “Barcelona en moviment 2004”, offering three audiovisual screenings. The cycle is devoted entirely to Venture Pons, the prolific Catalan film director who passed away this year. All three screenings are in Plaça Natura too, at 9.30 pm (free admission but advance booking required): Ocaña. Retrat intermitent (28 June), El perquè de tot plegat (5 July) and Barcelona (un mapa) (12 July). Advance booking is required to attend.

There’s more. Besides enjoying music and seeing some films that form part of the personal history of half of Barcelona, there’s also a chance to rediscover Park Güell this summer. The MUHBA invites you to do this with some routes it has prepared for 2, 15, 22, 23 and 28 June, 1 July, and 1 and 15 September. These routes start at 10 am (and one of them at 6 pm) and talk about the park’s connection with water, about gardening in Park Güell, its architecture and many other topics.
